TRAUMATOLOGY IN CHAARIA

It is nowadays very common to have orthopedic operations in Chaaria, due to fractures of different bones secondary to trauma.

The main reason why people come here is certainly related to our prices, which are extremely affordable compared to the ones of the private hospital where an orthopedic surgeon operates.

At the moment we are reasonably confident with fractures of the shaft of different bones. 

We can perform internal fixations of the wrist as well.

We are also able to deal with a number of fractures at the elbow, although that is a part of the body still a bit difficult for us, because of the complex anatomy and the risks of injury to the radial and ulnal nerves.

The main reason why our prices can be so affordable is the fact that all the expensive materials (screws, nails, plates, wiring and so on) are donated to us freely by the Volunteers from Sardinia (Italy). They have also bought for us all the expensive instruments necessary to perform the operations and the X-Ray machine we use in theater.

On top of that dr Luciano Cara is the only orthopedic surgeon coming to Chaaria now, and he is also my mentor from whom I have learnt everything in the field.

We feel that orthopedic surgery is an area in which there is a lot of need, and many people are still not able to afford an operation on financial ground: that is why we believe that we must invest a lot of efforts to improve our services there, in order to avoid that somebody may end up cripple simply because he/she could not afford an operation.

So far we are not yet ready for intramedullary nails, but the instruments are already here; the same applies for the internal fixation of the fractures at the neck of the femour… but we hope to improve quickly. Hip joint and knee joint replacements are not in our plans for the foreseeable future because of high costs.
